Support Ongoing Projects

This year we started two major projects to broaden the foundation of the Wikimedia and Free culture movement: “Education Toolkits for Liberal Studies” and the GLAM project.

“Education Toolkits for Liberal Studies” is a project which provides a set of toolkits for secondary school students to promote correct usage of Wikipedia as a knowledge gateway, and to encourage them to share their knowledge to Wikimedia projects. GLAM is the acronyms of Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums, which are the major sources of knowledgeable material, especially those with historical value. Some of the famous institutions around the world, including the British Museum, the German Federal Archive, and the National Library of France, and the Tropenmuseum in the Netherlands, are our culture partners either with Wikimedia Foundation or with our local chapters. We will receive donations of digital copies of the valuable resources from these GLAM institutions, and upload them to Wikimedia project if we reach an agreement with these institutions.

Wikimedia Hong Kong also initiated the Wikimedia Asia Project, which aims to encourage collaboration among the Asian Chapters and Wikimedia-affiliated groups. In the future, we might facilitate a meet up between these groups, and hold more joint-events.

Support Local community

Local Wikipedia community in Hong Kong began meeting in fall 2005. Since then, the Wikipedian Community in Hong Kong hosted 51 meet-ups, which is still a record within the global Wikipedian Community.

However, the turn-out rate is not particularlly high, because meet-up attendees need to cover their own expenses, and most community members are students.

In order to increase the turn-out, the Chapter may subsidize some of the cost of the events. Sponsorship for events will increase the variety of the meet-ups and encourage members to attend meet-ups and relevant free culture events.

Increase International Representation

The global Wikipedia community meets annually in Wikimania and as well as other working meetings and conferences. Although Wikimania has been held all around the world from Taiwan to Argentina, other working meetings are mostly hosted in Europe due to the distribution of Chapters. Representation from Hong Kong and Asian regions is relatively low.

With enough funding, the Chapter may support more executives and members, representing Hong Kong and nearby communities in these events. This definitely increases the visibility of the Chapter, and Hong Kong itself.

Cover the administrative cost

As a company limited, the administration cost of the Hong Kong Chapter is relatively high, compared to a society. Annual subscription to Company Registry, auditing service, domains and web storage are all used to be covered by limited membership subscriptions.

Donations help to sustain this current infrastructure, as well as further development. Some ideas like renting an office to provide a hub for the Chapter and the community were considered; however funds are not yet sufficient for us to do so.

Part of the administrative cost can be covered by actual gifts of facilities and equipment, and the chapter will treat them as cash donations of the same value.
