From Wikimedia Hong Kong, the Local Wikimedia Chapter in Hong Kong
Wikimedia Hong Kong (WMHK) is the local chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, which is a local charitable institution exempt from tax under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance. It aims to promote a correct usage of the Wikimedia Projects, at the same time draw more free contents to the Projects. Promote free culture along with local counterparts is another important vision. The Chapter had host several events, like the annual anniversary conference, and some other member's activities.
The idea of founding such a chapter originated with local wikimedians as volunteers for Chinese Wikimedia Conference 2006. After the conference, most of volunteers formed a preliminary committee for the chapter. It eventually was founded on 14 July 2007, and was officially registered as a Company Limited by guarantee and not having a share capital, under Chapter 32 Company Ordinance of Hong Kong, on 18 September 2007. It was recognized by the Foundation on 1 March 2008.
We hold anniversary conferences to brainstorm our directions in the future annually, and we support counterparts in free cultural events in the city. Also we started several projects to galvanize support the local free culture, also to support the Wikimedia’s regional development in the Asia-Pacific region.

We support many free culture events of our counterparts, most notably the launch of Creative Commons Hong Kong (CCHK) in 2007. We also provide support by sending volunteer helpers or speakers to these events, like the Chinese Wikimedia Conference 2009, Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum 2010, CCHK’s Liberal Studies Creative Archive and Software Freedom Day.
